Barbora Krejcikova v Xiyu Wang Head to Head

Wang leads 2-1 head to head. The Chinese player won in Burnie in 2018 and in Budapest last year. Krejcikova won at the Australian Open in 2022.

Krejcikova Makes a Winning Start

Barbora Krejcikova won a three-set contest against Danka Kovinic in the second round on Friday to register her first win in Madrid.

The 11th seed, who had a first round bye, is playing in the tournament for just the second time. She was beaten in the first round on her tournament debut in 221.

Against Kovinic, the 2021 French Open champion faced some stiff resistance. Kovinic went toe-to-toe with the world no. 12 in the first set, with both players breaking each other twice each in the first six games. But Krejcikova got two more breaks in the set to draw first blood.

In the second set, it was the world no. 57 who got the sole break to tie the match at one-set apiece.

But just when it seemed Kovinic was back in the contest, Krejckova hit the top gear and raced away with the contest by bageling Kovinic in the final set.

The 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win improved the Czech to 18-8 this season. She has already won a WTA 1000 title this year by beating Iga Swiatek in the Dubai final.

A good clay court player, Krejcikova will look to improve her Madrid record further on Sunday.

Wang Digs Deep Against Andreescu

World no. 65 Xiyu Wang put up a gutsy performance to battle past 23rd seed Bianca Andreescu in the second round of the Madrid Open on Friday.

The close-to-three-hour contest saw Andreescu take the first set with ease. The Canadian seemed to be cruising when she built a 3-0 lead in the second set, but the Chinese was not going out without a fight. She pulled the break back and then edged the second set tiebreak to force the decider.

The third set was a competitive one at the start, but then Wang took charge and won four games in a row to wrap up the contest 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

It was the second straight comeback win for the 22-year-old lefty, who is making her Madrid debut this year.

Wang had beaten Varvara Gracheva 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday.

She had come into the tournament with a woeful 3-8 record this season, but the two gutsy wins would have surely done her confidence a world of good.

Krejcikova v Wang Prediction and Tip

Krejcikova has been in way better form than the Chinese this year. She will also be the fresher of the two as Wang was involved in two mentally draining contests. Expect the Czech to advance to the Round of 16.
