Hubert Hurkacz v Borna Coric Head to Head

Three previous meetings have yielded two wins for Coric and one for Hurkacz. They have faced off once on clay and Coric had won that 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters encounter.

Hurkacz Staves off Gasquet Challenge

Richard Gasquet’s form has been on a downward slope since January this season and it was no surprise Hurkacz had gone into his second round match against the Frenchman as a 1/4 favourite.

Which is why it was a surprise to see Hurkacz needing nearly two and a half hours and having to come back from a set down to seal off a third round place.

Hurkacz won 6-7 (9), 6-4, 7-5 in a match where fortunes fluctuated regularly. In the first set, Hurkacz had four set-points but he missed them all before Gasquet clinched it in the tie-breaker.

The Polish number one then earned a break in the fifth game of the second set before winning it off his third set-point. But more vitally, Hurkacz needed to come back from being 2-5 down in the final set to win five games in a row and progress to the next stage.

This was after Hurkacz was 2-2 on clay this season. Can he overcome the world number 20 in round three?

Coric Wins First Match on Clay in 2023

Form hasn’t been Coric’s best ally in recent times as he entered the Madrid Masters on the back of five successive losses. Two of those came on the clay courts of Monte-Carlo and Banja Luka before Coric finally managed to stall his losing streak.

Coric did not have a lot of problems either as he carved out a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hugo Gaston in the second round. The match lasted a mere hour and 23 minutes.

What would have been a bit of a relief for Coric is his serve was barely tested as he won 77% of his first serves and more vitally, 72% of the second. He also didn’t face a single break-point in the encounter.

It’s interesting to note that Coric might have done well in hardcourt competitions but his overall record on clay isn’t too shabby either. In fact his clay court winning percentage reads 54%, only marginally lower than the 54.7% he has on hardcourts.

Can he trouble Hurkacz with his serving?

Hurkacz v Coric Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz is 4/9 to win this and we will have to back him to carve out the victory. Coric, however, could put up a fight and we could see this go into the third.
