Karen Khachanov v Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head
There have been eight previous meetings between these two and Bautista Agut has won six of them. Interestingly, on clay, it’s 2-0 in favour of Khachanov but both matches went into a third set.

Khachanov Edges Past Monteiro
With Khachanov making the third round at the Monte-Carlo Masters and then getting bundled out in the second at Barcelona, he did have something going for him on clay this season.
As a result, coming into the second round here following an opening bye, Khachanov was a heavy favourite against the clay-court specialist Thiago Monteiro.
And he started off like that too, winning the opening set in 34 minutes needing just one break-point to clinch it. Monteiro retaliated with a break in the very second game of the second set and lost just six points on his serve to level the score.
It was no different in the decider, where again there was just one break of serve distinguishing the two players and this time around it went to Khachanov. In the very next game, Khachanov served out to win his first match in Madrid since 2019 and just second overall.
Can he triple his win count here?

Bautista Agut Struggles against Halys
It took Bautista Agut nearly two and a half hours in the end but he came through in three sets to seal his third round berth.
Facing Quentin Halys, Bautista Agut shrugged off the loss of the first set before winning the second in a tie-breaker and taking control of the encounter in the third with two breaks of serves. He clinched the match 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
The world number 25, who had reached the second round of this tournament in each of the previous two editions, entered the 2023 Madrid Masters with a 2-3 record on clay for the season.
Making things slightly worse for him is his more recent overall form which has seen him win just three of his previous 12 matches. A scrappy win against Halys was symptomatic of his form issues and that could be a factor come his third round match here.
