Medvedev Eases Past Vavassori

Daniil Medvedev made a strong start in Madrid as the Russian eased past Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori in the second round on Saturday.

The second seed, who has won four titles this year in addition to finishing runner-up in Indian Wells, improved his season record to 32-4 as he cruised past the world no. 164, who had beaten Andy Murray in the first round after coming through the qualifying rounds.

Medvedev saved all three of the break points that he faced against Vavassori and converted half of the four that he held to complete a 6-4, 6-3 victory in an hour and 23 minutes.

The world no. 3 doesn’t have a huge reputation on clay, but given his form this season he would be hoping to have a decent run on the surface this year.

Medvedev is making his fourth appearance in Madrid, but he has never made it to the last eight. After making a good start in round 2 he will be hoping to get a step closer to the quarterfinal with a win in the round of 32 on Monday.

Shevchenko Breezes Past Lehecka

He has been brilliant at the Challenger level this year and now the world no. 96 Alexander Shevchenko is blossoming at the highest level.

Shevchenko, who made it to the main draw of the Madrid Open for the first time in his career, has decimated his opponents in the first two rounds. First, the Russian knocked out American JJ Wolf 6-4, 6-4 and then he raised his level further in the second round, ousting No. 31 seed Jiri Lehecka 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday.

In a match that lasted just 46 minutes, Shevchenko converted 5 of 5 break points and saved the only one he faced to oust the world no. 37.

The Russian, who is currently sitting on a career high ranking of 96, won the Madrid Challenger earlier this month. He had also won the Challenger in Tenerife and finished runner-up in Phoenix.

Medvedev v Shevchenko Prediction and Tip

Shevchenko is in excellent form at the moment and is expected to give Medvedev a tough time. However, the second seed, despite not having a great record on clay, should have all the answers against the up and coming star. Medvedev is a vastly experienced campaigner and in top form this year. Expect him to beat the qualifier and move into the round of 16.
