Lajovic Edges Out Auger-Aliassime
In form Dusan Lajovic won his seventh consecutive match as he edged past seventh seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round of the Madrid Open on Saturday.
The world no. 40, who had won the title in Banja Luka last week by beating Andrey Rublev in the final, had begun his Madrid Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 drubbing of Jason Kubler in the first round on Thursday.
It wasn’t that easy on Saturday but he still dug deep to beat the world no. 9, who was making a return to the tour after a gap of one month. Auger-Aliassime, who last played at the Miami Open, was sidelined due to a knee injury. The Canadian had hoped to make a strong return but he couldn’t making winning return as Lajovic came out on top in the deciding set tiebreak.
The Serb had dominated the first set, taking it with ease after racing to a 4-0 start. The Canadian fought back in the second with the solitary break in the sixth game.
Neither player was broken in the final set, with Auger-Aliassime saving two match points in the final game. However, Lajovic began the tiebreak well, building a 5-0 lead. The Canadian did make a comeback effort but eventually Lajovic held on for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 7-5) victory.
Lajovic improved his season record to 19-10, including qualifiers and that includes a 17-6 record on clay. Can the 32-year-old extend his winning streak in the third round?

Struff Battles Past Shelton
He was lucky to reach the main draw as a lucky loser, but Jan Lennard Struff has looked in good form in the main draw so far.
The German ousted Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-1 in the first round and then showed nerves of steel in a dramatic three-set second round contest on Saturday to knock out Ben Shelton.
Shelton struck 21 aces and 43 winners in the match to 11 aces and 34 winners from the German. But it was not enough for the 32nd seed, as Struff won the key moments in the match.
After conceding the solitary break in the opening set, the lucky loser edged the second set tiebreak to even the match. He then broke Shelton twice in the final set while getting broken just once to register a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory in two hours and 21 minutes.
The 33-year-old is 30-12 across levels this year and that includes a run to the quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo. He had never gone past the second round in Madrid in his previous three efforts but has accomplished it this year. Can he win another to make the round of 16?
Lajovic v Struff Prediction and Tip
Both players are looking dangerous at the moment. While Struff will hold the psychological edge given his 3-0 head-to-head record, Lajovic will be high on confidence after beating three top 10 players over the last two weeks. Lajovic ousted world no. 1 Novak Djokovic and world no. 6 Rublev at the Srpska Open last week, and world no. 9 Auger-Aliassime on Saturday.
On current form, the Serb seems to be the favourite to advance from this contest.
