Sabalenka Holds Off Osorio

World no. 2 Aryna Sabalenka held off a determined Camila Osorio to march into the fourth round of the Madrid Open.

The Belarusian, who won the Madrid Open title in 2021 by beating Ashleigh Barty in the final, had begun this year’s campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sorana Cirstea in the second round on Thursday.

She didn’t drop a set during her third round win over the Colombian on Saturday, but Osrio presented a stiff challenge. The match lasted for over an hour and 55 minutes with Osoio converting 3 of 4 break points.

Sabalenka meanwhile held 12 break points in the match and she converted five of them for a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

The Belarusian improved her season record to 25-4. She is 5-1 on clay, having finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek in Stuttgart last week. Sabalenka, who has won two titles and finished runner-up twice this year, had clinched her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open by beating Elena Rybakina in the final.

The 24-year-old will look to continue marching forward in Madrid with a win over the 16-year-old on Monday.

Andreeva’s Dream Run Continues

Facing the reigning Australian Open champion will be 2023 Australian Open girl’s runner-up Mirra Andreeva, who has received a wild card for the tournament.

Andreeva celebrated her 16th birthday on Saturday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over world no. 19 Magda Linette in the third round. Andreeva improved her season record to 16-0 across levels. She had won the ITF Chiasso and ITF Bellinzona titles prior to coming to Madrid.

She kept her winning form going in Madrid, where she has reached the fourth round without dropping a set. Andreeva knocked out Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and then ousted world no. 14 Beatriz Haddad Maia to secure her first top 20 win.

She got her second top 20 win when she knocked out Linette on Saturday.

The world no. 194 saved 3 of 4 break points and converted 4 of 6 to beat the world no. 19 Linette 6-3, 6-3.

Can her fairytale run continue in the fourth round?

Sabalenka v Andreeva Prediction and Tip

While Andreeva has done well in the tournament, it will be a huge ask for her to upset the second seed. Sabalenka is the more accomplished player and is playing top-notch tennis. Expect her to cruise into the quarterfinals.
