Norrie Makes a Solid Start
He has had a quiet run since reaching the quarterfinals in Indian Wells, but world no. 13 Cameron Norrie got off to a winning start at the Madrid Open on Saturday.
The 11th seed Briton, who had a first round bye, ousted Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki in straight sets in the second round.
The lefty found himself in a bit of trouble when the Japanese got an early break and led 1-4 in the first set. But Norrie soon found his range and won five games in a row to clinch the opening set.
The second set was a highly competitive one with neither payer being able to break serve, and both went toe-to-toe in the tiebreak as well. Eventually it was Norrie who edged out Watanuki for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Norrie improved his season numbers to 23-7 overall. He is 10-3 on clay and has featured in two clay court finals this year. He fell to Carlos Alcaraz in the final in Buenos Aires but beat the Spaniard in the final in Rio.
Norrie had also reached a hard court final in Auckland, but finished runner-up to Richard Gasquet. He has been in a bit of a dodgy form recently, losing his opening matches in Miami and Monte-Carlo and only winning one in Barcelona.

Zhang Shocks Shapovalov
China’s Zhang Zhizhen shocked Denis Shapovalov in the second round on Saturday.
The world no. 99, who had begun his campaign with a 7-6 (7-6), 6-4 victory over Jurij Rodionov in the opening round, came back from a break down to oust the 21st seed Canadian 6-7 (4-6), 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
Zhang withstood 14 aces and 38 winners from Shapovalov, but he clinched the key moments in the match and was particularly dominant in the final set tiebreak.
The Chinese player, who is making his Madrid debut, is 10-12 across levels this year.
Can the 26-year-old cause another upset in the next round?
