Paula Badosa v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

It’s 1-1 between the two ladies; they last met in the 2022 Indian Wells Open semifinal, where Sakkari won in three sets.

Badosa Upsets Gauff

In what has been a much-needed boost for Spain’s Paula Badosa, she reached the fourth round in style by beating Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-0. It was a commendable performance from the 26th seed, who needed just an hour and 12 minutes to record one of the most impressive wins of her season.

In the preceding match, Badosa had dispatched Elisabetta Cocciaretto in three sets.

Paula’s record for the season is 13-6, but in terms of ranking, she has fallen down to the #42nd spot. This is largely due to her absence from the Australian Open, along with her inability to make it deep in the Indian Wells and Miami Open.

That said, she did stage a comeback in the clay events in Charleston and Stuttgart by reaching the last eight.

As a former world number two with many big wins, there is no reason why she cannot do so in Madrid too.

Sakkari Survives Masarova

Maria Sakkari found herself in a tricky match with Rebeka Masarova, lasting two and a half hours. The ninth-seeded Greek took the win ultimately with 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Compared to Badosa, Sakkari has had a comparatively better spell in 2023; she is now 17-8 and ranked #9.

Admittedly, she did lose early in her last couple of tournaments. Maria fell to Karolina Pliskova in the round of WTA Stuttgart, while in Miami, she lost to Bianca Andreescu in the opening match.

Overall, Sakkari has been largely consistent (as usual) – evidenced by her semifinal showings in Linz, Doha, and Indian Wells.

To her credit, the 27-year-old has a decent clay-court pedigree and exceptional experience. In fact, she has been among the tour elites longer than her Spanish adversary – which gives her a fair bit of an advantage.

Sakkari v Badosa Prediction and Tip

Sakkari has got a better chance of winning this match, but do not be quick to undermine Badosa – she is playing at home after all. Expect an entertaining affair with many games in the offing.
