Liudmila Samsonova v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Samsonova Stuns Ostapenko

Liudmila Samsonova of Russia sent a strong message to the rest of the field when she beat former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-0 in round three. The match lasted just an hour and saw the 14th seed win 85% of the points behind the first serve (compared to Ostapenko’s 41%). She also won an impressive 11 games in a row.

Samsonova began her campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maryna Zanevska – needing just 90 minutes to win the match.

This is only her second time competing in the Mutua Madrid Open – and has already posted her best results so far in the competition.

Now ranked World No. 18, Samsonova has had a slow start to the season. To put things in perspective, she closed last year at 30-17 and the year before at 39-22. At the moment, she is 10-9.

Her best result was the runner-up feat in WTA Abu Dhabi – where she had beaten Barbora Krejcikova, Veronika Kudermetova, and Qinwen Zheng. Apart from that, Liudmila also reached the mid-rounds in a few other events.

Begu Scripting her Resurgence

Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu, seeded #31 in Madrid, defeated Karolina Muchova and Shelby Rogers in straight sets to reach the fourth round.

One more win, and she will have reached her third quarterfinal in this WTA 1000 event; the other two coming in successive seasons in 2015 and 2016.

That will be a tall order to deliver, considering the season Begu has had so far. She is 9-7 in 2023, with her best feat being the semifinal stint in Adelaide. Most recently, she also made it to the third round in Charleston.

It is also worth noting that the 32-year-old ended the 2022 season right after the Palermo Ladies Open.

Samsonova v Begu Prediction and Tip

Samsonova is the clear favourite here, given her form and momentum. Begu’s experience will come in handy, no doubt, but her lack of rhythm will make things difficult. That said, the Romanian is comfortable with playing on clay, so at the very least, she is equipped to fight hard.
