Mayar Sherif v Elise Mertens Head to Head

The two ladies have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Sherif in a Superb Form

Egypt’s Mayar Sherif is on fire in Madrid as she stormed into the fourth round after dismissing Caroline Garcia 7-6(2), 6-3. Her other triumphs in the tournament came against Camila Giorgi and Anhelina Kalinina.

With this, she has recorded her best-ever results in a WTA 1000 event. Up until now, her second-round showing in Indian Wells Open was her most notable run.

She is now 10-10, seeking to turn around her string of early exits in Merida, Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Lyon, Hobart, and Melbourne. However, a recent semifinal showing in ITF Oeiras did give her some momentum.

Mayar was also a quarterfinalist in Monterrey – but that took a lot of doing with long affairs against Camila Osorio and Xinyu Wang.

The current World No. 59 has done well on clay in the past. Last year, she was 26-5 and the year before, 26-10 on the surface. Sherif’s sole two WTA finals have come on clay, and so have her four Challenger trophies between 2021 and 2022.

Mertens, Enjoying a Comfortable Start

Elise Mertens has had a good run in Madrid so far. With a bye into round two, the 24th seed beat Rebecca Marino and Jule Niemeier in straight sets.

A quarterfinalist here in 2021, the Belgian looks well-primed to make it there again. Her record at the moment is 15-9 – the highlights being a semifinal showdown in Monterrey and a fourth-round run in Miami. That said, she has also seen some struggles when she lost to the likes of Xinyu Wang and Mirjam Bjorklund in the opening rounds in Indian Wells and Bogota.

Mertens is also a formidable doubles player with three majors and four WTA 1000 titles.

All in all, Elise is a wild card. She has the skills and experience to beat Sherif comfortably on paper – but given her inconsistencies at times, anything can happen.

Mertens v Sherif Prediction and Tip

This should be a good match. Sherif has got a shot at reaching the quarters, and from a value betting perspective, she does make for an appealing wager. Mertens will need to work hard to avoid an upset here.
