Alex de Minaur v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head

De Minaur Ousts Cecchinato

No. 16 seed Alex de Mianur began his fourth Madrid Open campaign with a straight sets win over Italy’s Marco Cecchinato in the second round on Saturday.

The Australian saved all seven break points that he faced in the match and converted one of the five breaking chances he held to beat the world no. 85, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in an hour and 46 minutes.

The world no. 19 De Minaur is in good form this season. He has an overall record of 16-9, which includes a title success in Acapulco — his seventh title at the tour level.

De Minaur has not had a lot of success on clay over his career, but showed signs of improvement on the surface during a 9-6 season last year. This year, he is 3-2 on clay and featured in the quarterfinal in Barcelona, thanks to  a walkover in the round of 16.

He looked good in the opening round win on Saturday. Can he build on that this week?

Karatsev Beginning to Look Good Again

Aslan Karatsev is slowly beginning to find his feet once again. The Russian, who had come into the tournament with a 4-7 season record on the tour, has won back-to-back main draw matches for the first time since reaching the semifinals of the Maharashtra Open at the start of the season.

Kartsev’s win over Botic Van de Zandschulp in the second round on Saturday was his fourth straight win in Madrid this year. He had made it to the main draw with back-to-back straight set wins over Raul Brancaccio and Jan-Lennard Struff in the qualifying rounds.

Carrying that form into the main draw, the world no. 121 defeated world no. 70 Laslo Djere 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the first round.

He was more dominant against the world on. 29 on Saturday, beating the Dutchman 6-2, 7-5.

Karatsev, who reached the round of 16 in 2021, is aiming to return to that stage this year. Can he pull off another upset win on Monday?

De Minaur v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

Karatsev is slowly regaining his form. He has a better record on clay than De Minaur, but will be a bit low in confidence as his lean patch has extended for over a year. De Minaur meanwhile has been playing well over the last year. Expect a tough three set contest with De Mianur edging out the Russian.
