2018 quarterfinalist, Daria Kasatkina will be playing in the round of 16 in Madrid for the second straight year. Last year, she was stopped from progressing further by Sara Sorribes Tormo, but this year, she will be hoping to return to the last eight stage.
The eighth seed is off to a good start in the tournament, scoring back-to-back straight set wins.
Kasatkina, who ousted fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-3 in the second round, needed an hour and 27 minutes to beat Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 6-4, 6-2 in the third round.
Ranked no. 8 in the world, the 25-year-old faced stern resistance from the Ukrainian in the opening set as Tsurenko came back from a break down twice. But eventually it was Kasatkina who got a third break in the final game to take the opening set.
The second set began with both exchanging an early break but soon Kasatkina took control of the set and went on to win the match 6-4, 6-2.
Kasatkina, who was a finalist in Adelaide-2 and a semifinalist in Charleston, improved her season record to 10-10. Can she improve that record further with a win in the fourth round on Monday?
Kudermetova Battles Past Potapova
After edging out Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in three sets in the round of 64, 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova scored another three-set victory in the round of 32 on Sunday.
The world no. 13 took the first set in the tiebreak and was in a position to win the match in straight sets but she missed out on a match point at 3-5 (30-40), which allowed the 21st seed to come back in the contest. Potapova took the second set and forced the decider.
In the final set, both players held serve over the first seven games before Kudermetova finally got the decisive break. She eventually won the three-hour contest 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-3.
Kudermetova has been a two-time semifinalist this year. She also lost twice in the last eight stage this year.
She has an overall record of 12-9 and is 2-2 on clay this year.
With the two draining contest played in the two previous rounds impact her performance in the round of 16?
