Sherif Scripting History
Mayar Sherif of Egypt is etching history in the Madrid Open 2023. She just became the first Egyptian player to reach the final eight in a WTA 1000 event.
She did so in style by beating the doubles prodigy Elise Mertens 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Before this, it was the fifth seed, current WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia who succumbed to the 26-year-old in straight sets.
Sherif’s other exploits in the Spanish capital came against Camila Giorgi and Anhelina Kalinina.
Mayar is now 11-10 in 2023 and ranked #59. However, by next week, she would have jumped up in the rankings and taken home a significant amount in prize money.
Credit where it is due, Sherif is a good player on clay. She did reach the semifinal in ITF Oeiras; moreover, she has four Challenger titles and two WTA finals – all on red courts.
Sabalenka in Blazing Form
Consecutive titles in Adelaide 1 and Australian Open, runner-up feats in Indian Wells and Stuttgart, and now quarterfinal stints in Dubai, Miami, and Madrid – Aryna Sabalenka has been a living embodiment of consistency this season.
Her record is now at 26-4, and the current World No. 2 has been near impossible to defeat. With the exception of Sorana Cirstea, Sabalenka has not lost to any player who hasn’t been in the top 10 this year (losses to Iga Swiatek, Barbora Krejcikova, and Elena Rybakina).
The number two seed in Madrid is yet to drop a set as she moved past Cirstea, Camila Osorio, and Mirra Andreeva.
A champion here in 2021, Sabalenka looks well on track to repeat that feat. Not only that, but she is also a solid player on clay.
Sabalenka v Sherif Prediction and Tip
Sabalenka is the heavy favourite and should do well to win this one comfortably. That said, Sherif is having a moment and we have seen this time and again where underdogs take the field by surprise and stun the big guns. The Belarusian has all the reasons to take this one cautiously.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Sabalenka to win 2-0
- High-Risk Tip: Sherif to win in three sets
