Begu Upsets Samsonova

Irina-Camelia Begu continued her great run in Madrid, beating Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 6-4.

Seeded #31, the Romanian previously defeated Karolina Muchova and Shelby Rogers to make it this far. She will now compete in her third quarterfinal in this WTA 1000 event; the other two coming in successive seasons in 2015 and 2016.

Whether she goes further is anyone’s guess. Begu is now 10-7 in 2023, with her best feat being the semifinal stint in Adelaide. Most recently, she also made it to the third round in Charleston.

The 32-year-old has some experience to make her case; in addition to her exploits in the Madrid Open, she is a semifinalist in the Italian Open (2016), the reigning Palermo Ladies Open champion, and the 2021 French Open semifinalist.

Sakkari Knocks Out Badosa

In what was a clear statement win, Maria Sakkari defeated the home favourite Paula Badosa 6-4, 6-4 to reach her maiden quarterfinal in Madrid. In the preceding rounds, she dispatched Arantxa Rus and Rebeka Masarova.

With this, the Greek finds herself on a redeeming path again. Since reaching the semifinal in Indian Wells, Sakkari lost her opening bouts to Bianca Andreescu and Karolina Pliskova in Miami and Stuttgart.

That said, she was also a semifinalist in Linz and Doha earlier in the season, so it has not been all bad for her.

Plus, let us not forget that Sakkari is one of the most consistent performers on the circuit. After all, the current #9 has been a regular part of the top 10 for three seasons now and has 10 WTA quarterfinal appearances in 1000 events at the very least.

Sakkari v Begu Prediction and Tip

This one is Sakkari’s to lose, but she cannot take this too lightly. Begu is experienced and can surprise Maria – as she did once in the past.

Expect an entertaining affair with many games in the offing.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Sakkari to win 2-0
  • High-Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games
