Borna Coric v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

They have faced off just once before this and that came at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters where Fokina had won a gripping three-setter in the first round.

Coric Shocks Hurkacz

After easing past Hugo Gaston in the second round of the Madrid Masters, Coric reached the round of 16 at this tournament for the third time in his career as sent Hubert Hurkacz out in a shock result.

Coric, who was 17/10 odds coming into the encounter, edged past his opponent in the first set before claiming his spot in the fourth round with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win.

In a match lasting an hour and 39 minutes, Coric prevented getting broken in the first set, facing not a single break-point in it before clinching it in a tie-breaker. The second set saw just one break of serve – the only one for the match – and it went in favour of Coric, who went 5-3 up.

The Croat missed three match-points as he served for the match in the next game, faced a break-point – his third of the set – before staking his place in the next round with the next match-point.

Can he now edge past Fokina here?

Davidovich Fokina Stunner for Rune

Like his opponent in this fourth round match, Davidovich Fokina also went into his previous round encounter as a distant second-favourite against Holger Rune. And he came away a winner, although it did take him a lot longer and needed him to put up a sterling display against a fighting opponent.

Davidovich Fokina was on court for more than three hours and six minutes as he shrugged off four breaks of serves to come through 7-6 (1), 5-7, 7-6 (5) in the third round.

Having eased past Albert Ramos-Vinolas in his previous round, not too many had given Davidovich Fokina a chance here against a player who had come into the encounter with eight wins to one defeat on clay this season.

That didn’t matter as Davidovich Fokina defended well and then grabbed the opening set in the tie-breaker, without having lost a set. Things turned out in the second set as Rune twice went a break ahead, serving it out in the 12th game.

The third was bit of a roller-coaster as Davidovich Fokina went a break down to begin with and then earned two breaks of serves which allowed him to serve for the match at 5-3. While Rune broke back, Davidovich Fokina did not let that break his focus in the tie-breaker and came away a shock winner.

Coric v Fokina Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be an interesting match-up with Davidovich Fokina starting a 1/2 favourite here. Backing him to win but in three sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fokina to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4
