World no. 10 Taylor Fritz moved into the fourth round of the Madrid Masters with a straight sets win over Cristian Garin on Monday.

The eighth seed American is one win from reaching an eighth consecutive quarterfinal this season. Fritz won the Delray Beach title earlier this year and finished in the semifinals four times. Two of the final four finishes came in the previous two clay court tournaments in Monte-Carlo and Munich.

He has an overall record of 27-8 this year and is 7-2 on clay.

Fritz had begun this year’s Madrid Open campaign with a 7-6 (13-11), 6-4 victory over Christopher O’Connell in the second round. He carried the momentum into the next round dispatching Garin 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in an hour and 33 minutes.

Fritz served 10 aces and won 88% points on the back of his first delivery.

The 25-year-old will be hoping to keep the rhythm going in the fourth round match against Zhang.

Zhang Continues to Surprise

Facing Fritz will be China’s Zhang Zhizhen, who stunned 11th seed Cameron Norrie in a three-set thriller on Monday to become the first Chinese man to reach the round of 16 of a Masters 1000 tournament.

The 26-year-old Chinese right-hander, who has been extremely impressive on his Madrid Open debut, needed two hours and 13 minutes to beat the Briton, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-2).

Zhang was outplayed by the world no. 13 in the first set, but he clawed his way back in the second set tiebreak and then dominated the third set tiebreak as well to keep marching forward in the tournament.

Ranked no. 99th in the world, Zhang had begun his Madrid campaign with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory over Jurij Rodionov in the first round and then came back from a set down to score an upset win over Denis Shapovalov in the second round.

Can Zhang keep his momentum going?

Fritz v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Fritz will be wary of Zhang’s giant killing ability. But given the American’s form, he will still be the favourite to end the Chinese player’s incredible run in the tournament.

Tips:

  • Tip 1: Fritz to win: 1/6
  • Tip 2: Under 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
