2019 Madrid Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas moved into the fourth round of this year’s edition with a second straight three-set win on Monday.

The world no. 5, who had a first round bye, had rallied from a set down to battle past Dominic Thiem in three sets in the second round. He was stretched to three sets as well in the third round by 25th seed Sebastian Baez but he once again found a way to win the contest 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

In the two hour and 14 minute contest, Tsitsipas won 75% points on his first serve and saved 4 of 6 break points against the world no. 31. He himself held 8 breaking chances in the match and he converted three of them to sail through.

In addition to being a runner-up to Novak Djokovic in 2019, Tsitsipas was also a semifinalist last year.

He e has featured in two finals this year, finishing runner-up at the Australian open and the Barcelona Open. He was also a quarterfinalist in Monte-Carlo and has an 8-2 record on clay this year. Cn Tsitsipas reach a third consecutive clay court quarterfinal on Tuesday?

Zapata Miralles Edges Past Safiullin

World no. 42 Bernabe Zapata Miralles is enjoying the best season of his career so far and the Spaniard added another feather to his cap by reaching the fourth round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in his career.

Zapata Miralles had never gone past the first round of an ATP 1000 tournament in his previous four appearances. But he had made it to the last 16 at Roland Garros last year (his best performance so far in a big tournament).

Zapata Miralles, who reached his first two ATP semifinals in Buenos Aires and Rio this year, was off to a sensational start in Madrid, as he saved two match points to register a come-from-behind three-set win over Mackenzie McDonald.

Zapata Miralles then outplayed Daniel Evans in straight sets in the second round before registering a second three-set win, this time over qualifier Roman Safiullin.

The Spaniard struck 33 winners, converted 3 of 11 break points and saved 5 of 7 to dump out the world no. 113, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The 26-year-old improved to 13-11 in 2023. All 13 of his wins have come on clay, where he has a 13-6 record. Can he keep his impressive run going in Madrid?
