Iga Swiatek v Petra Martic Head to Head

Swiatek won the only meeting between the two in Indian Wells last year and it was a straight sets win.

Top seed Iga Swiatek held off a valiant comeback effort from Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round of the Madrid Open on Monday to keep charging towards a third title of the season.

The world no. 1 conceded a break in the very first game of the match but made turned things around quickly, by taking the opening set through a double break.

Swiatek started the second set well and even held a match point at 4-5 (30-40) but the Russian saved it to stay in the contest and then went on to win the set in the tiebreak.

Swiatek took control of things in the final set and clinched the contest by breaking the world no. 17 twice in the deciding set. The match that lasted two hours and 27 minutes saw Swiatek convert 5 of 6 break points and convert 1 of 3.

Swiatek extended her unbeaten clay court streak to 7-0 in 2023. She had come into the tournament as the Stuttgart champion. In Madrid, she began her campaign with straight set wins over Julia Grabher and Bernarda Pera in the second and third rounds respectively.

The Pole is 23-4 overall this year. In addition to the Stuttgart title, she also won in Doha and finished runner-up in Dubai. This is the first time she is into the last eight in Madrid. She will be hoping to go deeper in the tournament.

Martic Marches On

Petra Martic reached her second quarterfinal in Madrid with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Barbora Krejcikova on Monday.

The world no. 33, who was a finalist in Linz earlier this year, will be featuring in her second quarterfinal of the season.

The 27th seed had begun her Madrid campaign with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory over Laura Siegemund in the second round of the tournament. She then edged out Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the round of 32.

Against the world no. 12 Krejcikova, Martic saved 6 of 9 break points and converted 4 of 9 to march into the last eight.

Martic improved to 13-9 overall this year and 5-1 on clay, including qualifying rounds. Can she improve that record further with an upset win over the top seed.

Swiatek is the overwhelming favourite in this contest. She is unbeaten on clay this year and has been in great form throughout the season. Expect her to win in straight sets.
