Pegula Sees Off Trevisan
Last year’s runner-up Jessica Pegula continued her march towards a second final in Madrid as she edged out Martina Trevisan in the round of 16 on Monday.
The world no. 3, who went down to Ons Jabeur in last year’s final, needed two hours and seven minutes to battle past the world no. 20, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Both players held 11 break points in the match, with the American converting seven of them, while the Italian converted six.
Pegula had begun her 2023 Madrid campaign with back-to-back straight set victories over Magdalena Fręch and Marie Bouzkova in the second and third rounds respectively.
Pegula is 27-7 this season and 6-1 on clay, having reached the semifinals in Charleston in the previous tournament.
The 29-year-old’s best performance this year saw her finish runner-up in Doha, she also lost in the semifinals in Dubai, Miami and Charleston. Can she reach a fifth semifinal of the season?
Kudermetova Saves Two Match Points to Oust Kasatkina
No. 12 seed Veronika Kudermetova dug deep for the third straight round to keep her hopes alive in the tournament.
The world no. 13’s latest win came over fellow Russian Daria Kaasatkina on Monday. Kudermetova saved two match points on her serve in the final set before going on to secure a win in the deciding set tiebreak.
The two hour and 55 minute contest saw Kudermetova edge the first set. But Kasatkina made a resounding comeback in the second set. She had two great opportunities to close out the match in the 12th game, but she squandered both, allowing Kudermetova to come right back into the contest. The latter dominated the tiebreak to seal a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory.
Kudermetova had also won the previous two rounds in three sets. She first defeated Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in round 2 and then ousted Anastasia Potapova in another three-hour contest.
A two-time semifinalist and two-time quarterfinalist this year, Kudermetova has a 13-9 season record. She had come into the tournament on the back of four consecutive defeats, but has been very determined during the tournament. Can she topple last year’s finalist?
