Coric Scrapes Past Fokina

In what turned out to be one of the longest matches of the tournament, Coric needed nearly three and a half hours to squeak past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and seal his second quarterfinal appearance at the Madrid Masters.

Coric won 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (5) in a match filled with eight breaks of serves. Three of them went against Coric but it was the two extra ones he got in the second set which helped him not just level the match but also fill him with confidence for the decider.

Davidovich Fokina went 4-3 ahead with a break of serve in the third set but Coric broke right back to level the encounter. He then overturned a 0-3 deficit in the tie-breaker to clinch it 7-5 and make it through.

Having beaten Hugo Gaston and Hubert Hurkacz in the previous two rounds, Coric will feel quite good about himself in the upcoming last-eight encounter.

Lucky Loser Altmaier Makes Last Eight

Jaume Munar was a 3/5 favourite coming into his fourth round match against Altmaier but did not last too long in the match. Altmaier registered a 6-3, 6-0 win over Munar in a matter of an hour and 20 minutes to help him tip over the line.

Altmaier faced four break-points – two in each of the two sets – but found a way to save them all. On the other hand, he got 11 break-points and broke his opponent a whopping five times to register his ninth win on clay this season.

This includes a title win at the Sarasota Challenger earlier in April, following which he was knocked out in the first round of the Munich Open and lost in the qualifiers of this tournament in Madrid.

A last-minute withdrawal not only allowed him a place in the main draw but it also gave him a first round bye.

Since then, wins over Oscar Otte, Yannick Hanfmann and now over Munar give him his first ever quarterfinal appearance in a Grand Slam or an ATP 1000 event.

Coric v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Coric is a heavy favourite here and should come through easily. One of the sets could turn out to be a toughie but that’s as far as we think Altmaier’s journey will go.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Coric to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
