Swiatek Rolls Into Semifinals

Top seed Iga Swiatek extended her unbeaten run on clay in 2023 to 8-0 as she stormed into the semifinals of the Madrid Open with a straight sets drubbing of Petra Martic on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old came out all guns blazing as she bagelled the Croatian in the first set. The Pole also got the solitary break of the second set to go on to secure a 6-0, 6-3 victory in an hour and 10 minutes.

Swiatek was not broken in the match as she saved the only break point that she faced in the opening set. The Pole, meanwhile, held four break points in the match and she converted all four of them.

The world no. 1 is 24-4 in 2023 and she came into the tournament having won the Stuttgart Open title — it was her first clay court tournament of the season.

Swiatek also won the title in Doha this year and finished runner-up in Dubai. On Thursday, she will be aiming to reach a fourth final of the season.

A 13-time champion from 16 finals on the tour, Swiatek began her Madrid campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Julia Grabher in the second round and then she ousted Bernarda Pera with the same scoreline in round three.

Ekaterina Alexandrova was the only player to stretch Swiatek to three sets this year, but she was eventually beaten by the Pole 4-6, 6-7, 3-6.

Kudermetova Wins Fourth Consecutive Three-Setter

No. 12 seed Veronika Kudermetova put up another determined effort to upset last year’s finalist and third seed Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.

It was the fourth time in a row that the Russian was stretched to three sets in the tournament, but like the previous three rounds, she edged past the American for a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 victory.

Kudermetova won just 47% (75 of 158) of total points in the match, but she won the key moments in the first and the final sets to seal the win in just over two hours.

This is the third time the world no. 13 has reached the final four stage this year. She was also a semifinalist in Adelaide-2 and in Doha. While she withdrew from the former, she was outplayed by Swiatek in the latter.

Kudermetova’s road to her maiden Madrid semifinal included three-set wins over Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the second round; Anastasia Potapova in the third round; and eighth seed Daria Kasatkina in the round of 16.

Can she put up another gritty performance on Thursday?
