Alcaraz Knocks Out Khachanov
Carlos Alcaraz continued his charge towards title defence in Madrid as the Spaniard knocked out Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.
The top seed, who won the first set with a solitary break, found himself 2-5 down in the second set. But the 19-year-old turned things around by winning five games in a row to complete a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
The world no.2 Alcaraz had started the tournament with a three-set comeback win over Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. He followed that up with straight set wins over Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev in the third and fourth rounds respectively.
With the win, Alcaraz is now 27-2 this season. The nine-time tour-level champion has featured in four finals this year. He won the titles in Buenos Aires, Indian Wells and Barcelona.
Can he reach a fifth final of the season in Madrid and keep hopes of a title defence alive?
Coric Eases Past Altmaier
After surviving a fourth round scare against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, world no. 20 Borna Coric scored a convincing straight sets win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier to reach a maiden Madrid Open semifinal.
Coric did not face a single break point in the match, while he converted 3 of 5 break points to ease to a 6-3, 6-3 victory in an hour and 15 minutes.
This is the Croatian’s sixth attempt in the Spanish capital and his best in the previous five tries was a quarterfinal finish.
Coric began this year’s Madrid campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hugo Gaston in the second round and then he ousted Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the round of 32. While he was not broken in his first two rounds, he lost a set in the fourth round against Davidovic Fokina, before going on to win the contest in three sets.
Overall he is 11-9 in 2023 and 4-2 on clay. While Coric reached two quarterfinals previously in Montpellier and Dubai, this is the first time he has made it to the semifinal in 2023. Can he make it to the final with an upset win over the top seed?
