Jan-Lennard Struff v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head

They have met just once before and that was in the second qualifying round at the Madrid Masters. Karatsev won that match in straight sets to advance to the main draw, while Struff also made it to the main draw as lucky loser.

Struff Stuns Tsitsipas

Jan-Lennard Struff got lucky to find a place in the main draw despite losing in the second qualifying round to Aslan Karatsev. But the German has made the most of the opportunity by reaching his maiden Masters 1000 semifinal.

Struff stunned world no. 5 Steafnos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinal on Thursday to improve his season record to 33-12 across levels.

The 33-year-old, who saved a set point before taking the opening set in the tiebreak, was edged by the Greek in the second set. However, Struff got the solitary break of the final set in the fourth game before going on to claim the match 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-3.

It was Struff’s fourth consecutive three-set win in the tournament. The world no. 65, who beat Luca Nardi in straight sets in the first qualifying round before losing to Karatsev in the second, won his first round match in straight sets against Lorenzo Sonego.

He then had to bounce back from a set down in his next two wins over Ben Shelton and the in-form Dusan Lajovic respectively. Those two wins were followed by another three-set victory, this time over Pedro Cachin in the round of 16.

Sttruff, who was a quarterfinalist in Monte Carlo, has featured in three Challenger semifinals this year but is yet to reach a first final.

Karatsev Ousts Zhang

After struggling for consistency for over a year, Aslan Karatsev seems to be back in the sort of form that saw him soar to a career high ranking of no. 14 in the world.

The Russian, who entered the Madrid Open as the world no. 121, had an incredible run in the tournament, going from qualifying rounds to the semifinals.

Karatsev has dropped just one set in the tournament so far. He defeated Raul Brancaccio and Struff in the first two qualifying rounds in straight sets and then carried that form into the main draw, starting with a straight sets win over Laslo Djere in the first round.

Karatsev then ousted Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round before being taken to three sets by Alex de Mianaur. The 29-year-old, however, halted the no. 16th seed in the round of 32 and then scored an upset win over second seed Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16.

On Thursday, Karatsev knocked out China’s Zhang Zhizhen 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in the quarterfinal to reach his first-ever Masters 100 semifinal..

Karatsev struck 29 winners to Zhang’s 11 and saved all three of the break points that he faced in the match, while converting 1 of 2. Can he keep his incredible run going in the tournament?

Struff v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

Karatsev won the qualifying round contest against Struff with ease. He will be the favourite once again against the German. While Karatsev has won 6 of his seven matches in the tournament in straight sets, Struff has had to dig deep in most of his wins. So Karatsv will be the fresher of the two and that should help him in the semifinals.

Tips:

  • Tip 1: Karatsev to win in three sets: 1/3
  • Tip 2: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
