Stephens Returns from a WTA 125 Title Win

Having gotten knocked out of the Madrid Open in the very first round at the hands of Jacqueline Cristian, Stephens opted to participate in the WTA 125 tournament played in Saint-Malo in France last week.

And she lived up to the expectations one might have from the top seed in the competition as she romped to a title win there.

A tight straight-set win over Elina Svitolina was followed by a straightforward title-decider victory against Greet Minnen after having headed into that encounter as a 3/5 favourite.

Stephens will now hope to kick-start the Italian Open with her first win since 2019 when she had made the second round here.

Podoroska Improving But Still Outside the Top 100

It was in 2021 that three lower-level titles and some top-level performances on the WTA circuit had helped Podoroska jump to 36th in the world – her career-best ranking.

Since then it’s been bit of a see-saw battle on the ranking charts for Podoroska, who has seen a drop to 298th in the world in 2022 and starting 2023 ranked 196th.

The good news for the Argentine is she has managed to stall the fall and started climbing up again. And this ascent has been down to her title win on the WTA 125 tour where she clinched the Cali Open and made giant strides on the ITF circuit as well.

More recently, Podoroska was knocked out in the first round of the Madrid Open while making the second round in Reus. One can sense she is getting better but the big question is if she can find herself some crucial wins at the highest level.

Can Podoroska take advantage of Stephens’ erratic form?

Stephens v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

Stephens start an obvious bookmakers’ favourite at 2/5 but we think it could get a lot tighter than that. Expecting three sets in this.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Podoroska to win a set: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/6
