Niemeier Made Madrid Third Round

After making a horrendous start to the season, Niemeier seemed to have come into her own at the Madrid Open a few days ago. She had won a mere two of the 14 matches she had played going into Madrid and was on a seven-match losing streak when she faced Xinyu Wang in her opener.

Niemeier eased to her first win in eight matches as she routed Wang in straight sets but it looked like that’s all she would manage when she faced Petra Kvitova in the second.

Strangely though, Niemeier saved set-points on her way to defeating Kvitova in the second round – also in straight sets – to shrug off all that had happened before that tournament.

And while Niemeier lost in the third round of the Madrid Open, she enters Rome with the confidence not all’s lost in the season.

Parrizas Diaz Showing Signs of Sparkle on Clay

A third round appearance at the Australian Open earlier this season should have set the tone for something special but Parrizas Diaz has struggled to get going since then.

Three successive losses followed that showing and with only a second round appearance at the three tournaments after that, Parrizas Diaz was in strife.

Things went worse at the Bogota Open, her first showing on clay for the year where she lost to Francesca Jones despite starting off as a 1/3 favourite but Parrizas Diaz has managed to turn things around since then.

A couple of wins at the Billie Jean King Cup were followed by a second round appearance as a qualifier in an ITF competition, a second round showing in Madrid – again, as a qualifier – and a quarterfinal entry at the WTA 125 event in Reus.

Can the Spaniard now push on to make it difficult for Niemeier?
