Not quite known for her performances on clay, McNally enters this tournament in Rome having never played here before. Overall too, her record hasn’t been the best on the red dirt and that’s something she will have a chance to turn around.
The good news for McNally is she has had a decent start to her clay court journey of 2023.
It started with a first round win over Jule Niemeier at the Charleston Open and she then went on to clinch a second round berth at the Madrid Open as well. At both those tournaments, McNally lost in the second round.
More recently at the Reus Open, a WTA 125 competition, McNally was a winner in each of her first two rounds before falling in the quarterfinals.
The question is whether she can take advantage of taking on an opponent who has never been in the top 400 in her career?

Spiteri on Debut
Having played for the first time in a WTA tournament in Palermo 2019 – albeit in the doubles draw – Spiteri will now make her singles debut in Rome. The 504th-ranked Spiteri will hope she can put up a decent showing on a surface she has done well on in the lower-level competitions.
Spiteri hasn’t had a lot of tournaments under her belt this season either.
She began in February as she featured in an ITF competition in Egypt which she went on to win. Her second tournament for the year came a month later in South Africa, again on hardcourts, before she featured in the Monastir ITF competition a week later.
What needs to be seen is if she can convert some of this play and form into making it tough for McNally here?

While McNally is a favourite we think Spiteri’s clay court record gives her bit of an edge that should allow her to probably even take a set off her opponent.
