Elina Svitolina v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head
Svitolina leads 2-1, beating Tsurenko last in the 2017 Cincinnati Open in straight sets.

Svitolina Coming off a Semifinal Run
Former world number three Elina Svitolina is set to start the 2023 Italian Open on the back of a semifinal run in the Saint-Malo Challenger. She lost the match to Sloane Stephens 5-7, 6-7(5) – which does serve as some inspiration for the 28-year-old to build upon.
Svitolina returned to the tour only in April after a year-long maternity break. She is quite low on form and momentum as she picked up just one win in four tournaments – at least until she went to Saint-Malo.
The defeats have come at the hands of Clara Tauson (ITF Oeiras) and Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Madrid Open).
Now ranked #540, Elina is playing under a protected ranking.
She does have an excellent record in the Italian Open, having won the tournament back to back in 2017 and 2018. Svitolina was also a quarterfinalist in 2020 and 2021.

Tsurenko in Superb Form
Lesia Tsurenko ended the 2022 season 25-14. She has already made up for it by fielding an impressive record of 23-7 as of Monday this week.
The World No. 68 has been hard at work. Her high notes entail the runner-up feat in Hua Hin, where she upset Anna Kalinskaya, Tatjana Maria, and Bianca Andreescu en route.
Tsurenko also made it to the third round of the Indian Wells Open as a qualifier, beating Lin Zhu and Donna Vekic in the opening matches.
Most recently, the 33-year-old reached the same stage in the Madrid Open, too – this time by overcoming Lucia Bronzetti and Jil Teichmann in the early games.
Her track record in Rome is bleak, as she has never made it beyond round two.
Tsurenko v Svitolina Prediction and Tip
If Svitolina were at her peak, this would be a no-brainer. However, given her lack of consistency and form, Tsurenko has got a good chance to continue her decent run and start strong.
Of course, we must still consider Svitolina’s overall pedigree and career she has had – which includes 16 WTA titles and a top-10 ranking. At the very least, she can put up a good fight.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games: 5/6
- Moderate Risk Tip: Svitolina to win 2-1: 11/7
