David Goffin v Luca Nardi Head to Head
They played once before and Nardi was able to win that match indoors last year in Astana.

Goffin Picks Up Form in Aix
David Goffin prepared for this event by playing the Challenger event in Aix and he did fairly well making it to the semi-final and losing to Tommy Paul. It was a good sequence of matches from Goffin as he largely struggles this year on clay.
He’s 4-4 so far but he was 1-3 before he played in Aix. The 3 wins he got there helped him improve the overall score to 13-9 but his play isn’t passing the eye test. It’s very mid in terms of the way he can play and the way he played just last year.
Rome has never been the best event for him as he lost in the second round three straight years he played. Clay has generally never been his best surface so this isn’t surprising.
Facing a native player who will be motivated and inspired will certainly complicate things even further. He should win this match but if he’s not careful or doesn’t play well, he might just lose.

Nardi Eyeing Upset
Luca Nardi, like many other Italians, loves playing back home. There is only one Masters in Italy so generally all of the Italian players show up with a very strong level and play really well. Nardi is not the best clay player but he can win matches on the surface.
He’s 3-6 this year four straight losses on the surface dating back to the Monte-Carlo Masters. The year generally hasn’t been that good with a 12-15 record so it’s clear that he’s not playing at his best right now.
It could be some issues with confidence so playing back home in front of native fans could help with that. Goffin is a tricky player, probably a better player than Nardi at this stage of their careers but the Italian still managed to beat him in their only clash.
It was a close match in three sets and Nardi was able to win it. It will be a bit different on clay but maybe with the help of his fans Nardi can produce another great one.
Goffin v Nardi Prediction and Tip
I’m not personally sold on either player winning this match without problems so I think that the over might be a good beat. The odd is decent on Nardi but he’s not play that well but I think he can push it to three sets.
Tips:
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
