Ivashka Struggling With Consistency

Ilya Ivashka is currently on a three-match losing streak. The Belarusian last won a match in the first round in Monte Carlo over Dn Evans. Since then, he lost in the second round to Karen Khachanov and then suffered first round losses in Barcelona and Madrid.

Overall, it has not been a very productive season for Ivashka so far. The 29-year-old has an overall record of 6-10 in 2023 and he is 3-3 on clay. But those six wins also include two qualifying round wins in Monte-Carlo.

Ivashka was off to a woeful 0-5 start in 2023, before registering his first two wins of the season in Indian Wells. He also won a match in Miami and Monte-Carlo but once again saw a dip in form recently. So he is struggling for consistency at the moment.

He doesn’t have a great record on clay and the one-time tour-level champion will be hoping to end his losing streak with a win on Wednesday. If he does go on to win the opener, it will also be his first win in Rome, where he made a first round exit last year.

Wawrinka is a Former Finalist

Former world no. 3 Stan Wawrinka has a phenomenal record on clay and seven of his 16 titles have come on the surface.

The 38-year-old Wawrinka, who had fallen out of the top 100 after missing out almost the entire 2021 season due to a surgery, made a comeback last year and has been looking dangerous this year. He has been a consistent performer this year and as a result of it, has broken back into the top 100.

Currently sitting on no. 84 in the rankings Wawrinka will be looking to make a good start in Rome and continue his move up the rankings.

Wawrinka is 11-9 this season. He was a quarterfinalist in Rotterdam and Marseille and made it to the last 16 in Indian Wells. On clay, he is not off to the best of starts winning just two matches in three tournaments.

He can turn things around in Rome though, where he has a 24-16 record.

Wawrinka’s best at the Italian Open saw him finish runner-up to Novak Djokovic in 2008. Last year, the Swiss won two rounds before falling in the round of 16.

Ivashka v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip
