Molcan and Napolitano have never faced off before this.

Molcan Solid in Recent Clay Competitions

After having lost in the first round at the Buenos Aires Open earlier this year and then crashing out in the second round in Rio, Molcan had come into the European clay court swing without a lot of form under his belt on this surface.

That turned around at the Banja Luka Open where Molcan registered two shock wins en route the semifinals.

Molcan first overcame the 8/11 favourite Taro Daniel in his opener before defeating Laslo Djere despite starting out a 7/5 underdog in that match. And even in his defeat at the hands of Andrey Rublev wasn’t without a fight.

Later Molcan would go on to beat Wu Yibing in Madrid but Yoshihito Nishioka ended his journey soon after in that one.

Can he take that form forward into the Rome Masters here?

Napolitano Registers Two Surprise Wins in the Qualifiers

As recently as in April, Napolitano was playing on the Futures circuit, having fallen to outside the top 500 of the ATP Rankings.

He had failed to make it through the qualifiers of a Challenger tournament last month too before entering the Rome Masters qualifiers this month.

Napolitano started off 6/5 underdog in his first qualifying round here against Alexander Kovacevic and won it in straight sets. In the second round against Maximilian Marterer, he was even longer odds at 17/10 to win and fell a set behind his opponent.

The Italian came back from there to win the next two 7-5, 7-5 and grab his place in the main draw for the second time in his career.

Can he now cause an even bigger upset against the 1/5 favourite Molcan?
