Camila Giorgi v Arantxa Rus Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings on the ITF level and another two on the WTA circuit and while Rus won both at the former, it was Giorgi who scooped up the WTA matches. The last of those four matches came earlier this year at the Indian Wells Open.

Giorgi entered the Madrid Open for her first match on clay for the season. She had earlier won the Merida Open title on hardcourt but struggled after that.
A first round defeat in Monterrey was followed second round losses at both, the Indian Wells and Miami Open but then she was out of action for over a month.
Which is why there was a look of rustiness in Giorgi when she took to court against the 11/10 underdog Mayar Sherif. The Italian won the first set in that encounter but then lost steam to lose the next before retiring from the match because of fitness concerns.
Thankfully for Giorgi she is back here and faces an opponent whom she had beaten recently. The only catch here is that Giorgi isn’t much of a clay-courter.

Rus Makes it Through the Qualifiers Rather Easily
Rus has been pushed out of the top 100 on the WTA charts but she would be rather pleased by the manner in which she made it through the qualifiers to enter the main draw.
In her wins over Despina Papamichail and Elsa Jacquemot in the qualifiers, Rus lost just seven games in total and made it to the first round here in Rome for just the second time in her career.
The last time that happened, Rus went on to win her first round match as well.
Earlier this season, Rus has already featured in three ITF tournaments and two WTA competitions on clay. She won the Anapoima title while making the second round at both, the Madrid Open and Reus Open.
She will have a chance here.

Giorgi will need to shrug off her rustiness and her underwhelming clay record if she wants to win here despite her 3/5 favourites tag.
