Yulia Putintseva v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head

Putintseva and Tomova have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Putintseva Struggling to String Together Wins

After losing back to back matches in the United Cup, Putintseva’s first singles competition was in Hobart where she made the quarterfinals. Since then, however, she hasn’t won successive main draw encounters in any of the eight tournaments she has played.

Putintseva, who had a good time on clay last season, hasn’t begun too well on this surface either this year.

She was taken to three sets by the returning Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Charleston Open and then lost in the second. At the Madrid Open, she eased past Claire Liu but was then put to the sword by Caroline Garcia in the match that followed.

What needs to be seen is if she can turn things around here in Rome where Putintseva has done well in the past. She was a quarterfinalist here in 2020 and made the third round last season.

Can she replicate either of those performances this season?

Tomova Eases Through the Qualifiers

Having exhibited a couple of strong performances in the season already, Tomova eased past Sachia Vickery and Aliona Bolsova to enter the main draw of this tournament for the first time in her career.

She had done something similar in Madrid too – it had been far more difficult though as she made the first round as a lucky loser there before going down to Julia Grabher.

A second round exit at the WTA 125 event in Reus followed soon after, which makes her clay form slightly iffy. What needs to be seen is if she can replicate some of her rhythm from the previous season.

In 2022, Tomova had made the semifinal of the Bastad Open and then ran all the way through to the final in Budapest. A couple of similar performances on clay on the ITF circuit meant she had a good season on dirt.

Now for her to try and replicate that.

Putintseva v Tomova Prediction and Tip

Putintseva’s form brings Tomova into this and we expect her to win a set at the very least. Expect Putintseva to come through in three.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Tomova to win a set – Yes: 1/2
  • High Risk Tip: Putintseva to win in three sets: 3/1
