Tatjana Maria v Anna Bondar Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the Granby Open last year on a hardcourt surface and Maria had won that in straight sets.

Maria Solid on Clay

While Maria did not do as well as she would have liked at both, the Stuttgart Open and in Madrid, her overall performance on clay this season has been quite solid.

She won a WTA 250 title too, coming through for the loss of just one set in the entire Bogota Open tournament. Earlier, featuring on the WTA 125 circuit, Maria had made the quarterfinal of the San Luis Potosi Open.

Wins in the first round in Stuttgart and Madrid followed but Caroline Garcia got the better of her in the former while Bernarda Pera stunned her in the second round of the latter.

Maria hasn’t featured in the main draw of this tournament before this season, having gotten knocked out in the qualifiers of the 2016 and 2019 edition. She will be looking forward to her maiden win in Rome this time.

Bondar Hasn’t Won a Main Draw Match in Three Months

The last time Bondar won a competitive encounter was in Lyon in February when she defeated Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the first round of that competition. That was also only the second win of the season for Bondar.

Since then, Bondar has been a part of six WTA and one ITF competitions and won nothing. Yep, she is on an eight-match losing streak broken only by the three wins she registered in the Billie Jean King Cup.

Which is why wins over Amandine Hesse and Marina Bassols Ribera in the qualifiers here would have been both, confidence-inducing and relief-causing in equal measure.

Unfortunately for Bondar though, given her overall disposition on the courts at the moment, it looks highly unlikely she would be able to test her opponent in this one.

Maria v Bondar Prediction and Tip

Maria can be expected to come through in straight sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Maria to win: 4/5
  • High Risk Tip: Maria to win in straight sets: 7/4
