Paoletti Faces a Big Test
Matilde Paoletti of Italy is a little-known player, but that may very well change this week. The 20-year-old earned a wildcard into the main draw with a singles ranking of World No. 294.
Her tally for the season is 3-4, with the Italian Open set to be her first WTA event of the season. She has competed only in ITF tournaments in 2023 but never managed to bag more than one win in any instance.
Paoletti’s track record on the WTA side of things is bleak as well. She made her main-draw WTA debut only in Palermo last season, where she won the qualifiers but lost to Oceane Dodin in the opener.
To list Matilde’s highlights, there’s her title run in ITF Verbier and a semifinal stint in WTA 125 Bari.

Frech Sails through the Prelim
Magdalena Frech hardly faced any difficulties in the qualifiers this week, as she defeated Federica Urgesi and Polina Kudermetova in straight sets.
The 94th-ranked Pole is playing in Rome for the first time in her career. She has played a fair amount of tennis this season, with her current tally being at 15-14.
Frech is boasting some momentum as well, having reached the quarterfinal in the Saint-Malo Challenger and reaching round two in Madrid as a qualifier.
Her best result is the round-three stint in Miami, where luck did play a part. She fell in the qualifiers, but by virtue of the lucky loser rule, she got a ticket directly to round two, where she defeated Erika Andreeva in three sets.
The 25-year-old has not got an impressive pedigree, as her best title is the Concord Open Challenger from 2021.
Frech v Paoletti Prediction and Tip
Frech is experienced and has seen a whole lot of tennis at the top level. That should be enough for her to pull a win against the inexperienced Paoletti.
That said, Matilde is an underdog playing at home and given that her opponent is not exactly a top-10 performer, she does have a small chance of carving an upset.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Frech to win: 3/5
- Moderate Risk Tip: Paoletti to win: 11/5
