World no. 16 Liudmila Samsonova wil begin her Rome campaign in the second round after she received a bye in the opening round. The Russian has had an up-and-down season so far and comes to the Italian Open with a 10-10 season record behind her.
Samsonova had reached her fifth WTA final in Abu Dhabi earlier this year, but her perfect record in finals ended with a three-set defeat to Belinda Bencic.
The 24-year-old Samsonova’s next best performance of the season was a run to the round of 16 in Madrid, where she won two consecutive matches before falling to Irina Begu. Apart from Abu Dhabi and Madrid, Samsonova has not won consecutive matches in any other tournament this year.
Samsonova will be playing in Italy for the second time. She had lost in the opening round on her debut last year. Can she win her opener this season?

Kontaveit Trounces Parks
Anett Kontaveit began her Italian Open campaign with a straight sets drubbing of Alycia Parks in the first round on Tuesday.
The world no. 82 was broken by the American in the very first game of the match, but she quickly seized control and won six consecutive games to take the first set. Both players held serve to begin the second set, but once again it was the Estonian who took control and raced to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Kontaveit won 75% points on her first serve, converted 6 of 10 break points and saved 1 of 2 to knock out the world no. 49 in an hour and six minutes.
This was Kontaveit’s third main draw win at the tour level this year. She improved her overall season record to 6-6, which includes three wins at the Billie Jean King Cup last month.
Kontaveit is making her sixth main draw appearance in Rome. She was a quarterfinalist i 2017 and a semifinalist in 2018, but has been knocked out in the second round in her previous three appearances. Can she go past the round of 64 this year?
Samsonova v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip
Kontaveit has played little since her return from back injury last month, but she looked in fine form in the opener. Samsonova has been inconsistent but had looked good in the initial rounds in Madrid. It is going to be a closely contested match with Samsonova edging past the Estonian.
