Featuring in her first match on clay for the season, Andreescu was a 1/2 favourite against Xiyu Wang in their opening round clash at the Madrid Open.
Andreescu started off well when she claimed the first set and even though Wang put up a fight in the second, it looked like the former US Open winner would scoop it up in the ensuing tie-breaker.
She failed to do that as Wang came back to level the proceedings and then took the Andreescu serve to the cleaners in the third set to win the encounter in three.
Overall too, Andreescu hasn’t had much of a record on clay. In fact her win-loss of 21-11 is quite good but it also speaks volumes about how little she has played on the surface.
And that is typically a problem when you up against a player known for her performances on clay. Which is what could happen when Andreescu faces Vondrousova in the second round here.

Vondrousova Overcomes Struggling Kanepi
Kaia Kanepi has had a maor struggle all season and that could be seen in the pre-match odds assigned to her as she took to court for her opener against Vondrousova.
Kanepi was 11/2 to surprise Vondrousova and once the Czech player had bagelled her in the first set, the writing looked to be on the wall.
Vondrousova would have thought it was going to be all too easy as she broke Kanepi early in the second set again and raced to a 6-0, 3-1 lead.
It was here that Kanepi fought back to level the proceedings with a break in the sixth game and when she did that again in eighth and 10th game it looked like Vondrousova was suddenly struggling with her serving rhythm.
Fortunately for Vondrousova, she rediscovered it in the middle of the deciding set, breaking her opponent three times to clinch the encounter.
Things could get interesting if Vondrousova can find a way to get her serving right.

Vondrousova starts a favourite here at 2/5 with Andreescu’s record on clay being a well-known fact. Backing Vondrousova to win this but Andreescu has been steady in her tennis and could push the former French Open runner-up.
