Pliskova on a Comeback Tour
Former #1 Karolina Pliskova ended the 2022 season outside the top 30 – for the first time in 10 years. That was largely due to her injuries, but it seems that the experienced Czech is doing well to turn it all around.
It may not have been a picture-perfect season for Pliskova, but she is still at a respectable 18-8 and ranked World No. 14 at the moment.
To list her highlights, there are her consistent final-eight appearances in Stuttgart, Dubai, and the Australian Open, and a fourth-round showing in Indian Wells. In the process, she has also beaten a few top players like Maria Sakkari, Veronika Kudermetova, Donna Vekic, and Shuai Zhang.
To add to that, Pliskova has also got a solid pedigree in Rome with three consecutive final stints (title in 2019 and runner-up feats thereafter). If there is a place for Karolina to announce her return in style, this would be it.

Bondar Beats Maria
Anna Bondar of Hungary has had a busy week. Starting in the prelims, she beat Amandine Hesse and Marina Bassols Ribera on Monday and Tuesday to reach the main draw.
On Wednesday, she beat the veteran German Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-1 to reach round – in her very first Italian Open.
Bondar is in her element here, to say the least. She is at her best on clay – evident by her 16 ITF finals, 1 Challenger title and 1 WTA doubles title on the surface.
That said, her form this season puts her at 9-11 – which includes her exploits from the Billie Jean King Cup.
It is worth noting that Anna arrived in Rome on the back of an 8-match losing streak on the WTA Tour.
Pliskova v Bondar Prediction and Tip
On one hand, we have a former number one player with 32 WTA career finals which include Grand Slams and WTA 1000 trophies. On the other, there’s Bondar, who is ranked #93 and has been in a dramatic slump. Her pedigree is not strong enough either to beat Pliskova – at least on paper.
But stranger things have happened in tennis – Pliskova will start as the heavy favourite with a small possibility of an upset.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Pliskova to win: 2/7
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
