After having reached the quarterfinal of the Charleston Open where she eventually lost to Daria Kasatkina in her first clay court competition of the season, Keys opted out of the Madrid Open for reasons unknown.
The good news is she is now back in Rome and will start off her campaign against a player who scraped through to the second round despite starting out a 1/10 favourite in her opener.
Keys has had a solid season so far barring the fact she has featured in only six tournaments all year.
It started with a title win for the US at the United Cup before she made the third round at the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Dubai. While her performances in Indian Wells and Miami weren’t up to the scratch, Keys did well in Charleston to raise hopes of a deep run at the French Open later.
Can she now get herself going in a tournament she hasn’t gone beyond the second round in her previous three attempts?

She likes her time on clay and that has been on display this season despite Frech’s struggles. Her first round win over the 294th-ranked Matilde Paoletti was another example of the same as Frech needed two hours and 40 minutes to make it through.
In a match that saw Paoletti get the better of Frech’s serve five times, the Polish player eventually came through 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 to seal her place in round two.
This follows a second round appearance for Frech at the Madrid Open after beating Jasmine Paolini and a run to the quarterfinals of the Saint-Malo Open last week.
What this means is that while Frech can put up a fight against players of her pedigree or lower, she has had her issues against the caliber of the likes of Keys. Which is also why it doesn’t come as a huge surprise to see Frech start off a distant 21/10 in this encounter.
