Djokovic Starts Title Defense

Novak Djokovic will be in hot pursuit of title No. 7 at the Rome Masters this fortnight, starting his campaign in the second round against Argentina’s breakout star Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Djokovic’s physical condition coming to the tournament has been the hot topic dominating the tennis headlines after pulling out from his last Masters tournament in Madrid.

The Serbian star was forced to address a critical issue and the elephant in the room – a debilitating elbow injury that impeded his progress in both Monte Carlo and Banja Luka, where Djokovic made premature exits in both events.

He’s 2-2 on clay, slightly bewildering by his high standards, but he seems to have shaken off that injury in the build-up to the Italian Open. Djokovic was caught on cameras putting on an intense practice session with Jannik Sinner on Monday without wearing a protective sleeve on his elbow.

If indeed he is playing pain-free, he’ll no doubt be the favorite to make the final in his section of the draw.

Etcheverry Picks Up First-Round Win

Tomas Martin Etcheverry prevented a Banja Luka rematch between Djokovic and Luca Van Assche, after defeating the French young gun 7-6 6-3.

Despite the straight-sets scoreline, the match was extremely tight, and took precisely two hours to decide it. Both players finished off with 22 winners apiece, but it was Etcheverry who kept his unforced error count slightly lower, with 11 and converted five of 10 break points in the match.

It wasn’t smooth sailing for the Argentine on his own serve, landing just 58% of first serves and was broken three times. He’ll certainly need to pick his spots against the greatest returner of all time in order to stay in touch with Djokovic on Friday.

Etcheverry is not far off from breaking the top 60, and surpassing his previous career-high of No. 59. He is currently 61st in the rankings.

Djokovic v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

Hoping that the protective sleeve Djokovic was wearing is now gone, possibly for good, the top seed should charge past the Argentine here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 9/20
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games: 1/1
