There have been two previous meetings between these two and both were won by Gauff. This includes a 2021 Italian Open match too.

After having made an excellent start to the season, Gauff looks to have lost a bit of steam in more recent times.
The Auckland Open winner, who is still ranked fifth in the world, is coming off three successive tournaments in which she won her opener but lost in the very next round. This includes two tournaments on clay, including one at the Stuttgart Open and another in Madrid.
Gauff was taken to three sets in her opener at the Stuttgart Open by Veronika Kudermetova before Anastasia Potapova out-hit her in the very next round.
At the Madrid Open, it was Paula Badosa who routed Gauff 6-3, 6-0 and for a player to have been touted as one of those to watch out, it might not have been very inspiring.
Against Putintseva, Gauff should still not have a lot of worries but she will hope to start off strongly.

Ranked 76th in the world Viktoriya Tomova had come into her opening round match against Putintseva as a distant 9/5 underdog to cause an upset.
Two sets into the match, nobody could have been sure who held the advantage as both players had notched up a set apiece in tie-breaker.
It was Putintseva who carried the momentum of winning the second set forward and carved out a 6-0 win in the decider to move into the second round with the match lasting nearly three hours.
This follows Putintseva’s first round wins at both her previous two clay court competitions in Charleston and Madrid before getting undone by Ekaterina Alexandrova and Caroline Garcia respectively. She will hope to do a bit better this time around.
Gauff v Putintseva Prediction and Tip
There is no doubting who the favourite is in this match and we reckon she will come through in straight sets for a change against the Kazakh.
