There have been two previous meetings between these two and both have been won by Sinner. Both matches came in hardcourt competitions including one earlier this January.

Sinner Hoping to Put Illness Behind

It started off as a strong year for Sinner who won a title in Montpellier earlier this season and made two other finals including at the Indian Wells Open.

Unfortunately for him, he suffered an illness issue during the Barcelona Open, which was his second tournament on clay, and that forced him to withdraw from back to back competitions.

The Monte-Carlo Masters semifinalist gave Lorenzo Musetti a walkover in Barcelona and then opted not to participate in the Madrid Masters because of the same issue. Fortunately for Sinner, he wasn’t defending a lot of points at the latter which means he continues to remain the eighth-ranked player in the world.

Having made the quarterfinal in Rome last year, Sinner will hope he can now get back to his winning rhythm as he fine-tunes his performance for the French Open. Up against him is a player who isn’t quite a clay-court specialist but does make up for it with a lot of heart in his performances.

Kokkinakis Benefits from Munar Retirement

The last time Kokkinakis played Jaume Munar was two weeks ago, at the same stage at the Madrid Masters. He had come off second-best in that match but not before the Aussie had pushed Munar to two tie-breakers.

This time around, the Aussie has made it through to the second round but the result comes in less than ideal circumstances with Munar having to retire from the contest.

Kokkinakis, who had come into the tournament with a mere four career clay court wins and none this season, was leading 4-2 in the first set when Munar opted out of the match. This came close on the heels of the successive qualifying wins for Kokkinakis, both of which had come in straight sets.

Now, however, he takes on a player who has often been tipped to make it to the top four very soon and while Sinner is returning from a fitness issue, Kokkinakis might not have it easy at all.

Sinner v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

Sinner can be expected to stroll through but we might see Kokkinakis put up a brave front in one of the two sets at the very least.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Sinner to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 21/20
