After having kick-started his clay journey for the season with a sterling performance at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Rune came into the Munich Open as a favourite. And he lived up to those top odds as he romped to his fourth career title and second in a row in Munich.
Which is why a lot of eyes were on him when he took to court at the Madrid Masters recently.
And while the Danish number one scraped past Alexander Bublik in a rip-roaring, topsy-turvy affair of a second round match, he was sent packing in the third round by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Another keen tussle saw Fokina win in three sets, of which two were tie-breakers.
Based on his performances on clay this season, Rune can still be counted as one of those players who could make life difficult for the top-five players, while at the same time not giving up too easily on the court.
Which is why, he could continue to remain the player to beat despite that early Madrid exit.

He is just 18 years old but Fils has already shown what he is capable of when, on the quicker courts of Montpellier and Marseille, the Frenchman made it to the semifinal.
Fils won five of the seven matches he had played in those tournaments and all of them were in straight sets.
Which is why it was always going to be interesting to see how Fils adjusts to the slower clay courts and it did look like things weren’t going to fall into his lap. At Banja Luuka, in what was his first ever event on clay, Fils lost in the opening qualifier.
This was followed by another qualifying defeat in Madrid and a quarterfinal appearance in a Challenger event at Aix en Provence.
Here, he has had to make it through the qualifiers to enter his maiden ATP 1000 tournament on clay and then took three sets to get past Juan Manual Cerundolo in the opener.
Against a player of the quality of Rune, Fils might have met his match.
