Norrie Not Off to An Ideal Start on European Clay

It’s not been an ideal start for Cameron Norrie on European clay, but the 13th seed will look to make up for that in Rome.

Norrie, who lost in the opening round in Monte-Carlo, had won one match each in Barcelona and Madrid before falling in the next round. He will be looking to put those setbacks behind him and aim to start well at the Italian Open. He doesn’t have a great record in Rome though and has lost in the second round in each of his past three appearances.

Can he make it to the third round this year? He has the game and the quality and was in excellent form on South American clay this year, finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in Buenos Aires, but getting his revenge over the Spaniard in the Rio final.

Overall Norrie is 23-8 this season and 10-4 on clay. The lefty has reached in one more final apart from the two in South America this year and that was in Auckland, where he finished runner-up to Richard Gasquet.

Muller Eases Past Edmund

World no. 100 Alexandre Muller needed just 62 minutes to oust Britain’s Kyle Edmund in the first round and register his first ever win at a Masters 1000 tournament. In fact this is the first time that the Frenchman is pplaying in the main draw of an ATP 1000 tournament and he is off to a flying start.

In what’s turning out to be a great year for the 26-year-old, the win improved Muller to 7-2 on the tour this year and his overall record improved to 27-14 across levels.

Muller, who made it to his maiden ATP final in Marrakech, dominated the match against Edmund from start to finish. He did not face a single break point in the match and broke the world no. 473 twice in both the sets to complete a 6-1,6-3 victory. Muller dropped just five points on his serve in the entire match.

He had qualified for the main draw with a comeback with over Italy’s Gianmarco Ferrari in the first qualifying round and a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of another Italian, Franco Agamenone, in the second qualifying round.
