Felix Auger-Aliassime v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Popyrin leads 1-0. The Aussie scored a surprise win over the Canadian in Adelaide this year.

Auger-Aliassime Has Performed Below His Standards This Year

A quarterfinalist last year, Felix Auger-Aliassime comes to this year’s Rome Masters with not the most ideal preparations behind him.

The Canadian suffered a tough three-set defeat to Dusan Lajovic in his opening round match in Madrid, where he was making a return after nursing a left knee injury that he picked up in Miami.

Overall, Auger-Aliassime is 12-8 in 2023 and 0-1 on clay. He will be a touch disappointed by those numbers given the standards he has set over the last couple of years, and in particular last year.

The world no. 10 had won four titles from five finals during a 60-27 run last year, but this year Auger-Aliassime has not reached a single final. In fact a run to the final four in Doha remains his only semifinal appearance of the season. He has two quarterfinal finishes in Indian Wells and Rotterdam and lost out in the round of 16 at the Australian Open.

A decent clay court player, Auger-Aliassime would be hoping to have a good run in Rome to get into a good rhythm ahead of the second major of the year.

Popyrin Ousts O’Connell

Qualifier Alexei Popyrin served 10 aces as he knocked out fellow Aussie Christopher O’Connell in the opening round of the Rome Masters on Wdnesday.

The world no. 77 Popyrin, who had beaten Italians Riccardo Bonadio and Andrea Pellegrino in the two qualifying rounds, needed an hour ad 37 minutes to beat O’Connell 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

The 23-year-old broke O’Connell twice in the first set and was also up a break in the second, but O’Connell got the break back immediately and the set was eventually decided in a tiebreak, which was won by Popyrin.

Popyrin improved his season record to 10-10 on the tour and he is 21-14 across levels. His best this year was a quarterfinal finish in Adelaide and he also made it to the third round of the Australian Open.

Playing in Rome for the first time, Popyrin is off to a good start. Can he build on it and move to round three?

Auger-Aliassime v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Popyrin has played a lot more than Auger-Aliassime on clay this year and he also won the only match between them at the start of the season in Adelaide. So he will be high on confidence going into the contest and will ask some tough questions of the Canadian. Auger-Aliassime is a bit rusty having played just one match since his exit from Miami in March. But he is a top-class player and needs just a few good hits to get into the groove.

Expect a good contest with Auger-Aliassime edging through.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
