Daniel Altmaier v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

They played once before and it was this year in Melbourne. Tiafoe won that match in four sets.

Altmaier Survives Zeppieri

Beating an Italian at the Rome Masters is a very tricky thing to do and Altmaier found that out when he faced Giulio Zeppier in the first round. It was a chippy 3-set match which Altmaier won decisively in the final set serving up a bagel.

This matchup will be much tougher for the German because Tiafoe won’t just give up that easily, even if he’s not playing that well. Full effort is what he always gives though Altmaier has ways to trouble him. The German took a set off of him in Australia earlier this year and he can do that on clay too.

It’s been traditionally a very good surface for him and he’s played really well lately with a good showing in Madrid boosting his confidence even further.

The overall score is 19-13 and he’s 12-4 on clay. Some of his best tennis this year came on that surface and he will certainly look to keep that going in Rome.

Tiafoe Looking to Put Madrid Loss Behind

Frances Tiafoe didn’t wow anybody with his level in Madrid losing to a player he shouldn’t have lost even if he was playing on his opponent’s preferred surface. He’s not a stranger to clay and has performed really well on it actually winning a trophy this year on the surface.

He won the event in Houston and while it’s not the same clay as the one in Europe, it’s still clay. The year overall has been really good with 20 wins and 8 losses though the form lately has been somewhat shaky.

Altmaier is a player he knows and has defeated but also one that will give him quite a bit of trouble if he play well. The serve will be the main problem for Tiafoe who will need to find a way to return well because in rallies he should have the upper hand.

He’s never advanced to the second round in Rome so this is his best year in terms of results though he didn’t have to earn it on the court. To get to round three he needs to play well and win though that’s not set in stone as some might think.

Altmaier v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

I actually think that Altmaier should win this match based on what I have been watching in the past few weeks. I’m not going to back him to win the match though I will back him to push the games to over.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
