Alexander Zverev v David Goffin Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players at the highest level and both have won a couple of times. The last time they faced off was at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters and it was Goffin who had run away a winner.

A 12-12 win-loss record for the season isn’t quite what Zverev would have liked for himself but then again he is only just returning from his ankle injury. At this stage, in all likelihood, Zverev would probably take it, especially given his more recent form has been better.

At the Monte-Carlo Masters, Zverev had made the third round before falling in a fighting three-setter to Daniil Medvedev. He followed that up with a stunning opening defeat at the hands of Christopher O’Connell in Munich.

Taking to court at the Madrid Masters, Zverev looked to have found his mojo as he crushed Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 on his way to the fourth round where he met Carlos Alcaraz. Now Alcaraz was a favourite, sure, but one did expect the German to show some resilience.

Zverev was taken out 6-1, 6-2 by the world number two, adding question-marks to his current state.

He now starts off against a player who has gotten the better of him in the past which could make this an interesting exercise to watch.

Goffin Fights off the Nardi Challenge

After losing in the first round of the Madrid Masters, Goffin chose to feature in the Aix en Provence Challenger in the week between that and Rome Masters. And he did rather well too, reaching the semifinal there before falling to Tommy Paul.

Here, starting out as a 1/2 favourite against Luca Nardi, Goffin was forced to come back from a set down to seal off his second round berth.

Goffin won 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 24 minutes to proceed to take his place next to Zverev in what will be their fifth meeting on the ATP circuit and seventh overall.

Down a set and 2-0 in the second, Goffin then faced break-points in the third, fifth and seventh games of that set. He overcame that precarious position before breaking his opponent in the eighth and tenth games, almost against the run of play to bring parity into the encounter.

And with his confidence sky-rocketing, Goffin then crushed his opponent’s hopes in the final set with two breaks.

Can he push Zverev to the distance?

Zverev v Goffin Prediction and Tip

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Zverev to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 6/5
  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 2/5
