Tsitsipas Steady But Will Want to Do Better

On the one hand, Tsitsipas’ win-loss record of 9-3 on clay isn’t too bad. In fact that’s quite a high win percentage especially when one considers that he has played in some of the biggest tournaments on the circuit.

On the other hand, if Tsitsipas wants to challenge the likes of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz and start winning Grand Slams, he would want to do a lot more than just the 9-3 record that he has this season on this surface.

Sure there was a finals appearance at the Barcelona Open and that loss to Alcaraz in that title-decider can be overlooked. But defeats to Taylor Fritz and Jan-Lennard Struff in Monte-Carlo and Madrid respectively isn’t something Tsitsipas would have enjoyed too much.

Tsitsipas now enters this tournament as a previous season’s finalist and will hope he can find a way to go the distance again.

Borges Shocks Lajovic

Coming into the tournament as a 21/10 underdog in his first round against Dusan Lajovic, not too many would have given Borges a chance to win his opener, let alone do it in straight sets.

Borges, however, completed a 6-4, 6-1 victory in a mere 67 minutes to register a win in his maiden appearance in this tournament.

This also follows a 1-5 win-loss record on clay for Borges this season despite having kick-started the year with two title wins on the Challenger circuit. Both had come in hardcourt tournaments but for someone who has a reasonable clay court record at the lower level, he had made a very poor start to the clay season.

A win over Lajovic should do Borges’ confidence some good but it might not be enough for him coming up against a player of Tsitsipas’ calibre.

Tsitsipas v Borges Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas might have had his ups and downs but anything other than a straight-set win will be a surprise.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 4/5
