Fritz Steady on Clay
A semifinalist at the Monte-Carlo Masters, and then again in Munich, Fritz would have been expecting to do a lot better than his fourth round exit at the Madrid Masters.
Even more so when he grabbed the opening set of his fourth round match against the unheralded Chinese player Zhizhen Zhang who was 9/2 odds to win that encounter. Those odds considerably lengthened after that opening set and some fans might have even switched off their TV sets – or streams – assuming what was to follow.
Unfortunately for Fritz, the script didn’t go as planned.
Zhang refused to give up, taking both the remaining sets into tie-breakers and winning them after saving three match-points in it.
Fritz will know there’s not much he can do about it and would like to move on from that defeat but the fact still is he will need to start closing out such matches if he wants to return to the top five and go even further.

Hanfmann Stuns Jarry
Nicolas Jarry has already won an ATP title this season on clay and overall, he has two of them in his career. Which is why he held the favourites edge coming into his opening round match against Hanfmann.
Now Hanfmann’s form has been no worse. In fact in more recent times, he has done a lot better than Jarry and that was on show even in their first round encounter.
A semifinalist at the Houston Open and with Hanfmann having also made the third round of the Madrid Masters, he routed Jarry 6-4, 6-4 to make it to the second round.
Hanfmann was on court for an hour and 35 minutes and faced just one break-point in the entire match. While he was broken there – and also fell 3-1 down in the second set – the German carved out 11 of his own on Jarry’s serve and got the better of his opponent’s serve on three occasions.
Can he now carry that serving form forward against Fritz as well?
Fritz v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip
Fritz is 1/2 to win this which is a stark reminder about Hanfmann’s form and confidence – you would have expected those odds to be a lot shorter for a match between a top-10 player and one ranked outside the top 100. Fritz to win but could turn out to be anything but smooth.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Fritz to win: 1/2
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
