Their only previous meeting came in the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters qualifying and Sonego had won that in three sets.

Nishioka at Career-High Despite Underwhelming Form

Having started the season off on a superlative note, Nishioka climbed up to 32nd in the world as a result of those performances in Adelaide and at the Australian Open.

Since then, however, Nishioka has struggled to replicate that form and enters this tournament on the back of just three wins from his previous 10 matches. This includes an opening round defeat at the Cagliari Challenger last week where he was 7/10 going into his encounter against Daniel Elahi Galan.

Nishioka had earlier entered the Madrid Masters as a seeded player with an opening bye before he sent Alex Molcan packing. He proved to be no match for Andrey Rublev though.

On clay courts, Nishioka’s record doesn’t seem too good either. He has played just 33 matches on clay in the first place and won only 12. Compare that with his 91-89 record in hardcourt competitions and one realises how things are different for him here.

Sonego Crushes Chardy

Jeremy Chardy has been out of action for a while and his return to the Italian Masters was met with bookmakers pegging him at 6/1 to win his opener against Sonego.

Not only did that not happen but Sonego also ensured he wouldn’t be on court for a long time.

In a match that lasted a mere hour and 15 minutes, Sonego carved out a 6-2, 6-1 win on the back of four breaks of serves. Sonego himself did not face a single break-point.

The issue with this sort of a result, however, is that it can be discounted from how Sonego is actually feeling. Chardy was never going to be too much of a challenge and while it would have a good hit-out, Sonego will know his record on clay this season hasn’t been too good either.

Coming into this tournament, the Italian had won just two of the matches he had played on clay. Can he take advantage of his opponent’s struggles?

Nishioka v Sonego Prediction and Tip

For us, it’s Nishioka holds a slight edge in this battle between two off-colour players on clay. Bookmakers think otherwise.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Nishioka to win a set – Yes: 8/13
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Nishioka +3.5: 4/5
