Liudmila Samsonova v Donna Vekic Head to Head
Vekic has won both their previous meetings. One of those wins came in Roland Garros in 2019 and the other at the Australian Open this year. Both of those wins were straight set victories.

Samsonova Ousts Kontaveit
World no. 16 Liudmila Samsonova won her first main draw match in Rome as she knocked out Anett Kontaveit in the second round on Friday.
The 16th seed, who had a first round bye, needed an hour and 33 minutes to beat the Estonian 6-3, 6-3.
Samsonova faced nine break points in the match and she saved six of them. In contrast, she had eight breaking opportunities in the match and she capitalised on six of them.
With the win, Samsonova is now 11-10 for the season and she is 3-2 on clay. She had won two matches in Madrid before going down in the round of 16.
This is the second time she is in the main draw in Rome. Last year, she had lost in the opening round, so the win on Friday was he first in the tournament. She will be hoping to reach her second straight WTA 1000 round of 16 and for a third time in her career.
Samsonova had played in her fifth WTA final earlier this year, but her perfect record in finals ended with a defeat to Belinda Bencic in the Abu Dhabi final. It will be interesting to see how far she can go in Rome.

Vekic Rallies Past Sasnovich
Donna Vekic bounced back after losing the first set to knock out Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round on Friday.
The world no. 24 had broken early in the opening set but she lost five games in a row at the back end to concede the first set. The second set had a similar feel, but it was Sasnovich who got the early break to build a 1-3 lead. However, the Belarusian could not hold on to the advantage for long and Vekic won five games in a row to tie the match at one-set apiece and force the deciding set.
In the final set, both traded an early break, but it was Vekic who ran away with the match with two more breaks in the set for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory in two hours and 17 minutes.
Vekic was brilliant in the first quarter this season as a result of which she is 19-6 from all her matches this year. She won her fourth WTA title by beating Caroline Garcia in the Monterrey Open final and was also a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open (her second last eight finish at a major).
She is off to a solid start in Rome, can she build on that? Although clay has been the least productive surface for her and she isn’t expected to make a deep run.
Samsonova v Vekic Prediction and Tip
Although Vekic has won both their previous meetings in straight sets and one of those came this year in Melbourne, Samsonova will still hold slight edge on clay. The Russian had a decent run in Madrid and is off to a great start in Rome. Expect her to advance.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Samsonova to win: 1/2
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
